Did Ariana Grande’s Ex-Husband Dalton Gomez Break Her Heart? Singer’s New Album Sparks Speculation
Ariana seemingly took aim at her ex and sang about how she mistakenly thought she knew the person she was with.

Ariana Grande recently released Eternal Sunshine Deluxe: Brighter Days Ahead, a special edition of her groundbreaking album Eternal Sunshine, exactly a year after its debut. While the new release quickly grabbed headlines, many speculated that it subtly hints at her heartbreak during her two-year marriage to ex-husband Dalton Gomez.
One of the recently released songs, Intro (End Of The World) – Extended, included the lyrics: “I broke your heart because you broke mine." Ariana further sang, “So me, I am the bad guy, ‘Cause I’d already grieved you. And you started to realise I don’t need you." Many believed that through these lines, she referenced her split with Dalton, whom she married in 2021 and divorced in 2023.

Another song, Twilight Zone, further intensified the speculations. On the track, Ariana seemingly took aim at her ex and sang about how she mistakenly thought she knew the person she was with, but in the end, it turned out that everything was a lie. The 31-year-old also sang about living in a dream, only to realise later that she was with a person who was not what he seemed. “Hope you win for Best Actor / ‘Cause I had you completely wrong / Does she know you’re not who you say who you are?" the lyrics read.
Despite the heartbreak, Ariana, in the chorus, sang, “It’s not like I’m still not over you." However, she still was in disbelief at what had actually happened to her. “Sometimes, I just can’t believe you happened." Although she experienced troubles, the singer, through the lyrics, mentioned that she would not want to change anything in the past.
While her new songs might be a reflection of her past, Ariana also possibly hinted at her new romance with her actor-boyfriend Ethan Slater in the track, Hampstead. The song is named after the London neighbourhood the two stayed while shooting for their musical fantasy film, Wicked.
She even addressed critics who speculated about the timing of her new relationship. In the song, Ariana sang, “Threw away my reputation but saved us more heartache. Yes, I know it seems f–—d up, and you’re right, But quite frankly, you’re still wrong about everything. So far off, your seat’s nowhere near the table."
Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez filed for divorce in September 2023, which was finalised in March 2024. Meanwhile, Ethan Slater was also married when he met Ariana on the sets of Wicked in December 2022. He later divorced his wife, Lily Jay, in July 2023.
It is worth noting that neither Ariana nor her ex-husband has commented on the lyrics.
