Cop, ex-cop still behind bars
A POLICEMAN and an ex-cop charged with conspiracy to extort, who were last week offered $2-million bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court, have yet to take up the offer.
The men, Constable Omar Francis and ex-police corporal, Grantley Vickers, are part of a group of lawmen caught in a sting operation at the foot of Jacks Hill in Kingston, while trying to extort US$2 million from businessman Marvin Wong.
The Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) carried out the sting operation.
The others who were charged along with Francis and Vickers are District Constable Ainsworth Williams; Constables Clarence Ducille, Kevin Thompson and Dave Austin. Austin was offered $400,000 bail on February 17, while the others took up their bail offers yesterday.
Under the conditions of their bail, the men are required to:
* report to the BSI’s deputy superintendent, Maurice Goodgame, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm;
* surrender their travel documents;
* observe a nightly curfew from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am; and
* appear in court weekly.
The accused were also banned from all police stations, with the exception of the BSI. They have also been banned from visiting Denham Town, Jacks Hills Road, Russell Heights, Olympic Gardens, Mona, Havendale, Gordon Town, Mavis Bank, Shortwood Road, upper Old Hope Road — between Oxford Road and Matilda’s Corner — and the parish of Clarendon.
